A Place of Immense Historical Significance

Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib was founded in 1783 and it marks the place of the beheading of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji – the ninth Guru of the Sikhs in 1675 on the behest of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir. His martyrdom for the protection of religious freedom for the Hindus of Kashmir is remembered in history for tolerance, compassion and selflessness.

The word “Sis” means head in Punjabi and the Gurdwara was built at the place where Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was martyred by beheading him as he did not accept Islam. Beside there is another shrine called Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib where, after the martyrdom, his body was burnt by his faithful disciple Bhai Jaita Ji who then brought the head of the Guru to Anandpur Sahib.

The Architecture of Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib

However, there is an aura of despair and pain associated with the events that took place here; however, Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib is one of the most serene places to visit. The construction of the gurdwara has elements of traditional Sikh appearance but it is not devoid of modern features. The outside looks like a rich palace with the golden dome and white marble walls, and as you step in the sacredness of the building is felt.

The central hall has the Guru Granth Sahib which is the religious book of the Sikh community which is placed under a splendid umbrella. This place is thronged by people across the society to ask for blessings, to listen to the kirtan, and have a meal in the community kitchen or the langar as the Sikhs’ hospitality extends to serving free meals irrespective of color, caste, gender, or religion.

A Hub for Community and Service

Another noteworthy feature that is evident at Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib is the emphasis placed on serving the community or sewa, which forms the basis of the Sikh’s way of life. The kitchen running here is serving countless people through the langar meal every day. The equality sense is impressively felt as individuals regardless of whether they are Sikh or not gather to serve or to dine all sitting at the floor.

Besides preparing and serving langar, Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib undertakes many social and welfare services which cover education, medical help, and help in natural calamities. Such benevolences and sacrifices reflect the message of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and Sikhs Gurus in general.

Visiting Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib

Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib is a sacred place of worship and as such, visiting this site is rather a time for introspection. While walking through the crowded lanes of Chandni Chowk to reach the gurdwara, one can feel the difference between the outside market like environment and serenity of the gurdwara premises. This is so because the presence of constant prayers and hymns creates a serene environment of the gurdwara amidst the bustle of the city.

This is because, just like other gurdwaras, visitors are asked to take off their headgear and shoes upon entry as is the culture of the sikhs. It should be noted that the gurdwara is open for all regardless of color, race, or religion and this is in line with the Sikhism’s principles of Sarbat da Bhala, which means well-being for all.

Conclusion: A Beacon of Spiritual Strength

It is not just the worship place, but also a symbol for the spirit of martyrdom, liberty, and justice that this Guru of Sikhs fought for. And it goes on attracting millions of people, providing them with the union of faith and service.
