Overview

Hemkund Sahib and the Valley of Flowers are located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state in India. These two are normally visited at the same time because they are nearby and are both endowed with splendid natural scenic views. 

Hemkund Sahib

Hemkund Sahib or Gurudwara Sri Hemkund Sahib Ji is one of the important sacred places for the Sikhs. Sitting at an altitude of 4,632 meters (15,197 feet) it is among the highest Gurudwaras in the world. The name Hemkund literally translates to the lake of snow and indeed the Gurudwara is nestled next to a lake with water from a glacier and surrounded by seven mountains of snow. 

 

Key Features

 

Spiritual Significance: This place is considered to have been the meditation place of the tenth Sikh Guru in his previous birth. Many pilgrims visit the Gurudwara every year. 

 

Accessibility: The distance of about 19Kms has to be covered on foot to reach Hemkund Sahib from Govindghat through a strenuous trek. The trek in its entire route covers forests, waterfalls, and streams adding to the beauty of the place. 

 

Best Time to Visit: This gurdwara is open from June to October only because the rest of the year the area is snow clad. 

 

Valley of Flowers


The valley of flowers is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and national park famous for meadows of flower species and bio-diversity. It lies at an altitude of approximately 3,658 meters above sea level and occupies a space of approximately 87. 5 square kilometers. 

 

Key Features


Floral Diversity: This valley is gifted with more than 500 species of flowers and therefore best suited for botanists and natural lovers. Some of the flowers found here are; Blue poppy, Brahma Kamal and cobra lily. 

 

Wildlife: Apart from the floral species, the valley contains other wildlife species that include Asiatic black bear, snow leopard, musk deer, and red fox. 

 

Trekking Experience: The track to Valley of Flowers starts at Govindghat which is the same as the Hemkund Sahib yatra. The trek is for 16 km and it covers the fresh forests, bridges made of woods and other fascinating sceneries. 

 

Best Time to Visit: The ideal time for the valley of flowers trip is in the months of July mid September as the flowers are in full bloom during this time.

Day 1: Arrival in Rishikesh

 

Morning:
 
- Arrive in Rishikesh in the morning.
 
- Check in at your hotel.
 
- Relax yourself and have breakfast.
 
Afternoon:
 
- Explore Rishikesh.
 
- Go to see Laxman Jhula, a famous bridge with wonderful views.
 
- Go to see Ram Jhula, another famous bridge.
 
- Move to Triveni Ghat, a sacred bathing spot at the meeting of three rivers.
 
Evening:
 
- Attend the Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan Ashram.
 
- Return back to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
 

Day 2: Rishikesh to Joshimath

 

Distance: 255 km
 
Time: 9-10 hours
 
Morning:
 
- Have an early breakfast at the hotel.
 
- Drive from Rishikesh towards Joshimath.
 
- Stop at Devprayag to see the meeting of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers.
 
Afternoon:
 
- Lunch break at Rudraprayag or Srinagar.
 
- Continue the scenic drive through the Himalayan land.
 
Evening:
 
- Arrive in Joshimath.
 
- Check in at your hotel.
 
- Rest and adjust yourself.
 
- Have dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
 

Day 3: Joshimath to Govindghat to Ghangaria

 

Distance: Joshimath to Govindghat (20 km drive), Govindghat to Ghangaria (14 km trek)

 

Morning:
 
- Have breakfast at the hotel.
 
- Drive from Joshimath to Govindghat.
 
- Start the trek to Ghangaria, a beautiful trail through dense forests and with the river.
 
Afternoon:
 
- Lunch at Bhyundar Village.
 
- Continue the trekking to Ghangaria.
 
Evening:
 
- Arrive Ghangaria.
 
- Check in at your guesthouse.
 
- Rest yourself and recharge for the next day's trek.
 
- Have dinner and overnight stay.
 

Day 4: Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers and Back

 

Distance: 6 km (each way)
 
Morning:
 
- Have an early breakfast.
 
- Start your trek to the Valley of Flowers. (UNESCO World Heritage site)
 
Afternoon:
 
- Visit the Valley of Flowers, famous for its breathtaking landscapes and diverse flora.
 
- Have a full packed lunch in the flowers of the valley.
 
Evening:
 
- Return back to Ghangaria.
 
- Rest and relax yourself.
 
- Have dinner and overnight stay.
 

Day 5: Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib and Back

 

Distance: 6 km (each way)
 
Morning:
 
- Have an early breakfast.
 
- Start the trek to Hemkund Sahib.
 
Afternoon:
 
- Explore Hemkund Sahib and enjoy the serene surroundings.
 
- Have a fully packed lunch.
 
Evening:
 
- Return back to Ghangaria.
 
- Rest and prepare for the descent.
 
- Have dinner and overnight stay.
 

Day 6: Ghangaria to Govindghat to Badrinath to Joshimath

 

Distance:  Travel Ghangaria to Govindghat (14 km trek), Travel Govindghat to Badrinath (25 km drive), Travel Badrinath to Joshimath (47 km drive)

 

Morning:

 

- Early breakfast.
 
- Return back to Govindghat.
 
Afternoon:
 
- Drive towards Badrinath.
 
- Explore the Badrinath Temple, part of one of the Char Dham sites.
 
- Visit Mana Village, It is the last Indian village before the Tibetan border.
 
Evening:
 
- Drive back towards Joshimath.
 
- Check in at your hotel.
 
- Have dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.
 

Day 7: Joshimath to Rishikesh

 

Distance: 255km

 

Time: 9-10 hours
 
Morning: 
 
- Early breakfast at the hotel.
 
- Drive back to Rishikesh.

- Arrive in Rishikesh.
